I have been using linux only for the last 15 years. My wife and kids have been using linux only for the past 7 years. Last year my daughter who was studying in Chennai had problems with her Suse netbook. I mailed the list asking for someone in Chennai to help out. She was willing to go to the person's place for the re-install. Guess how many people volunteered? So she had to go to a browsing center and do her project work on windows. When she came here I installed Fedora 14 - and things are ok until she buys her usb modem - do you expect her to install and configure usb_modeswitch on her own? I have been doing foss evangelism for the last 16 years, and have failed more often than succeeded. The major reason for failure is lack of support. The lesson I have learned is: if you cannot support it, do not install it. I know that all LUG members who have been doing this over the years will agree with me. Search the list archives for ELCOT/Umashanker. > d) if a Linux laptop is acceptable in Germany, Australia, Italy, > Brazil, even in Kerala and what is the support infrastructure in these places? > - what makes the Chennai L(inux)UG oppose this. what makes you think Chennai LUG is opposing it? > I hope this is not the consensus stand of the Chennai LUG - rather a > couple of dissenting opinions. Chennai LUG does not work by consensus - some members act in accordance with what they feel is the best way to handle things, the rest pontificate - so in which group are you? -- regards KG http://lawgon.livejournal.com Coimbatore LUG rox http://ilugcbe.techstud.org/ _______________________________________________ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
