Backfire in what sense ? Linux only laptop will give "bad image" in what
sense ? Overwhelming majority of students are not familiar with
computing let alone Windows 7 - so the question of "wont let go of
windows" is only applicable to a miniscule percentage of students who
are not even the target of this program.

a) It does not curtail freedom in any way - students can purchase
windows with their own money and install it either in a VM or directly.
They can even pirate it and assume all associated risks.

b) all purported activities for which the laptop program is intended for
can be accomplished using Linux. Online research/ coding/
communications. It makes no sense to purchase Windows 7 Starter with
taxpayer money. If LUG members disagree, please present scenarios where
a Windows 7 laptop is an imperative.

c) it is disingenuous to suggest that since students are probably going
to play games anyway lets just give them windows and make it easy. This
is a self fulfilling prophecy.

d) if a Linux laptop is acceptable in Germany, Australia, Italy,
Brazil, even in Kerala - what makes the Chennai L(inux)UG oppose this.

I hope this is not the consensus stand of the Chennai LUG - rather a
couple of dissenting opinions.
