Hi Friends, I am glad to announce that today we had a Workshop and FOSS Awareness programme at I.F.E.T College of Engineering, Villupuram, Tamil Nadu. Mr. Yogesh - Application developer in Open Source Team at CSS CORP., ( Member of Ilugc and PuduvaiLUG too) with his friend Mr. Amirthanarayanan - member of both LUGs gave us a good Start of Ignition towards FOSS.
The workshop was divided into two sessions. * Forenoon Session:* - History of Linux - Open Source and FSF. - Distributions of Linux. - Community support for Linux. - Video of Comparison of Graphical effects of Vista vs Ubuntu ( Youtube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ ) - A short Movie Created using Open Source Software " *Blender* " - SINTEL (www.sintel.org) *Afternoon Session:* - Programming Languages available with FOSS/LINUX - Final Year Projects should be done on own and not to buy so FOSS is good place to start with - GCC Compiler - A quick Demo. - Demo on Compiling and Installing ' *tar.gz* ' source compressed files. - Package Managers in Ubuntu - Explored some of the packages - Showed a Demo on few Interesting and Amazing FOSS Applications ( such as SweetHome 3d, Celestia - http://www.shatters.net/celestia/) and even mind blowing games like 0A.D., Lincity, etc.) - Installation of Ubuntu Linux and Basic commands to work with it held at our FOSS Lab as a Hands on Session. - Discussion about Mailing List, IRC, and gave us some valuable advice to get started in FOSS for our future. Our Sincere Thanks to HOD of CSE Ms. S. Nirmala , To let us to get this opportunity to bring in such a great persons into our campus and made a good turn up to FOSS. After this Session most of the students were seriously discussing about FOSS and even joined the mailing list too. Thanks for creating such an interest in students of our college. Again we thank Mr. Yogesh Girikumar and Mr. Amirthanarayan for spending their valuable time for us. We have planned to start a LUG at our college named IFETLUG in few days.
