Please follow the mailing list guidelines and avoid top posting. Interleaved trimmed posting style is the recommended on this mailing list. If you are getting the same error while trying to install the packages with root privileges, check if you are trying the apt-get install command when synaptic is open. It is not possible to have more than one instance of package management utility running and trying to install packages. You haven't mentioned which version of Ubuntu you are using, so I am not sure which version of Eclipse will be in the Ubuntu repository for that release. If you want to install the latest version of Eclipse that is not yet in the Ubuntu repos (I am not sure if that is possible or not), you can download the Eclipse binary from the Eclipse website and run it directly, provided you have already installed the JDK.
