Most of the business involves "SELLING" support. Support (directly from the
company or its partners) costs money. True, there are people on forums and
mailing lists who can help a lot. But if an enterprise is involved, it would
be good to have a paid subscription for support since mission critical
systems need "instant" fixing in case they get into trouble.

I hear that "Mark Shuttleworth" (who founded and probably is funding
canonical) is a "very rich" entrepreneur. He's the second self-funded space
tourist !! He is a venture capitalist and has his own private jet. That
apart. Canonical also sells support.

One other business model is to make some components of the eco-system
commercial. For. e.g. Canonical has "Landscape" which is a "configuration
management system" ( to put it simply ). Users have to pay for Landscape
subscription.

Read up on : Landscape, canonical and mark shuttleworth. And about open
source business models on wiki.
