Update: 1. Ubuntu 9.1 forms Xorg.conf on the fly and so I was not able to find a config file. From the logs found that Intel is the chosen driver. 2. Beginning kernel version 2.6.30, the modeset is enabled by default. 3. OpenGL and mesa7.6 are installed by default during installation. 4. Compiz with all effects works well and so does Counterstrike with either OpenGL or D3D video.
a. Having done this, was sure the problem was in VBox. b. Reading up showed that D3D to OpenGL translation is done by WineD3D which need to be used in VMs for D3D support. c. Downloaded the pre-built binaries for windows and installed them in the safe mode in the Guest Windows OS. d. Ran dxdiag and the utility crashed when D3D was checked. Many on the net say they've got D3D support work this way. Did not for me.
