Guys & Gals (if there are any), We all love our OS and the software that comes with it. It doesn't matter if you use Linux, Hurd, BSDs' or even openSolaris. The advantage we have is the use of GCC. Almost all open source OS use GCC. This helps our application to be compatible in source format. Not to mention Python, Ruby, and the old horse PERL, etc...
We all understand the advantage of using a OSS to CSS and most importantly how it can impact a country like ours. It is important that we take up efforts to spread the use of OSS through various means... On a selfish thought, if OSS is widely adopted then our corporate survival is comfortable (which most of you will be looking at soon). Following are some of my suggestion for the spread OSS and aim for increased use. I understand, you will already be doing some of these. 1. Linux fest - invite users of computer to try and use open source OS. Help them install open source OS, ask them to participate in the novice group of ilugc. 2. Meet government - Gov is a very important users an influencer in IT market. Gov of India looks at IIT prof for approval of key IT decisions. ilugc sould work with these prof and also ensure they participate in the ilugc meetings and mailing list. Form committee to work with the Gov bodies. 3. Meet schools - Students today are tomorrows nation builders. We need to capture them young. We can form committee to work with school to open their doors for us to help them setup open source OS based computer lab and they use GCC (at present CBSE uses the defunct Turbo C++). 4. Write open source OS that are useful to corporate management - this is open area open source developers have not much ventured. This softwares can be fun to develop and very satisfying as you can use a lot of mathematical models to develop decision support system. 5. Lastly - guide other LUG close to us to adopt such measures for them. 6. We should organise annual Linux conference in our city and invite software shops and other users. Organise special presentations targeting how open source can address the need of the hour. Remember that we are all volunteers in this cause. We also need some funding. We should be talking to IBMs, DELL, HP, Red Hat, Oracle, etc... If these group is interested then we can start working towards it.
