The RFC 5321 restrictions apply to mailing list messages specifically.
In other cases, this remains open to interpretation.
Except the charter of this WG says:
- There is a desire to maintain validation of a message's signing
identifier across common transit and forwarding modifications. When a
message goes through a re-posting, such as through a mailing list, the
validation signature typically does not survive and cannot be recovered.
Fixing this would permit a more robust evaluation of the message.
and that the WG will develop technology that will:
- Identify message mutations made by any handling agent that affect
signature validity; and
- Attach annotations in transit of the intended chain of handling to
assure accountability for each delivery, aiding in the mitigation of
backscatter.
Effectively, that means that this group has been permitted by charter to
not follow the guidance in 5321 3.9.2. Objections that are solely on the
basis of the last paragraph of 3.9.2 are not going to be entertained in
the WG.
