Friis Trophy Team Racing Intersectional

April 8-9, 2006

Day 1 Report:

I can think of three great ways to spend a birthday. Unfortunately, two of
them are not legal in most parts of North America. The third, however,
involves watching 24 color-coordinated sailboats as they intricately maneuver
themselves in and out of nearly disastrous situations and attempt to form
winning combinations of 10 points or less. Sure, the sun was not shining.
Sure, the weather was frigid. Sure, I wanted to sleep past 7:30am on a
Saturday. But, the chance to see a properly executed leeward mark trap that
boosts a teammate from 5th to 1st is just too good to pass up. So, with the
rest of today’s competitors, I spent the first hours of my 25th year floating
carefree on Upper Mystic Lake. Was it worth it? Absolutely.

Special thanks to John Tagliamonte for his help with judging today.

Special thanks to Garth Reynolds for his help with maintaining our fleet.

Special thanks to all the freshman who sat in the finishing boat and scored
races.

Very special thanks to Stephanie Brown for bringing me coffee. It was
delicious.
