Is there any way to specify different colours for "soft" states and "hard"
states?

No, there isn't. Soft states show current check attempt counters, but no
dedicated CSS class is going to be set. Sounds like a reasonable feature
request.
At present the service grid shows "red" (for example) when there's a critical
service check state, even if it's still "soft" and might well recover before
turning into an Alert and sending a Notification.

I'd like to be able to see on the service grid whether the state is hard, and
needs attention, or is still soft, and may well sort itself out on its own
without sending an alert to anybody.

You could also filter them. Create a dashboard showing soft and hard
problems in distinct dashlets. I've met similar requirements before,
this is "Do not bother me unless notifications are sent". Mostly in
larger enterprises, smaller ones tend more to the "Oops, there is a
problem, let's fix it immediately" way of handling issues :D

So, adding one more CSS class allowing people to visually distinct soft
and hard states would make sense to me.

Cheers,
Thomas
