The satellite does not need a database connection for sending checkresults.
That's part of the cluster connection (bi-directional).

You should think of a HA master setup in Europe, as well as two check
satellite zones - Europe & USA. the masters only notify and write to DB IDO
for Icinga Web 2 for example.

In terms of traffic this highly depends on

* checks/min
* check output & perfdata
* additional messages (e.g. Log replay)
