I'll politely disagree that "stipping out php [...] wasn't
the best idea [...]" as that was one of the acts that kept the
entire suite relevant and useful in my environment. Whilst I
agree that there needs to be a more "modern" UI -- especially
for those who have never used anything other than "modern"
interfaces -- there still needs to be a lightweight interface
that gets the job done in a minimal environment.
PHP can still be used in a minimal environment, but that's nitpicking
and not something I want and will discuss here. It could have been Ruby
(on rails), Python (Django), etc ...
On the other hand, maintenance of C code using printf HTML inside is
something I don't consider fun nor really applicable in terms of
resource management for development hours. Modern systems have likely
different issues, but the old grown code is something I don't consider
mature enough for proper implementations - think of Icinga 2 clusters or
large historical views.
I think the Web interface is nice and very flashy, but it's
fat enough that it renders the machines in my lab unusable (due
to memory consumption issues) so I depend on the C interface
for actual work.
It does not cache anything and parses the two status files on each
reload. Apart from the frameset this is imho one of the worst parts.
I run databases on the systems (one MySQL and
the other Postgres) so could deploy the Web interface if any
of the other systems were robust enough, but that's not the
case. I use the databases for other things like history and
monitoring the monitoring systems ("watching the watchers").
A combination of status data (livestatus etc) and historical data
(database) is presumingly best, and something we will achieve with
Icinga 2 and a modern web interface.
Even if I consider finding a Classic UI installation in 10 years on a
small instance, I don't think it's the future.
Have you tried Icinga Web 2 already, especially with co-workers and
managers?
Kind regards,
Michael
Cheers!
