Oy. Did not mean to cause a firestorm over this. Sure, it can add up; but a big database
back then was what, 10M rows? So saving one byte was 10MB, not nothing, but still only 5%
of a 3330. At some point, the cost of folks' time and the extra CPU involved also becomes
significant. And dealing with it now is going to cost even more. So my comment was meant
just to be rueful, as in, "It might have made sense at the time, and now we're
really sorry; c'est la guerre."
It wasn't single byte per record in single table! It was (it *IS*)
element of some culture - to avoid dummy characters.
How many? It depends. For well constructed record the room for savings
is zero or close to zero.
For PFCSK ever date contains separators (2020-04-22 14:55:12), fields
are separated by blank etc.
It can be few bytes per EVERY RECORD IN almost EVERY TABLE. The example
above - at least 5 bytes in date, let's assume also 6 bytes for field
separation, 4 another junk and LRECL=400. We have 400 vs 385. 3.75% Is
it huge difference? For current storage prices (2M assumed) it will be
$37,500.
This is the cost of 5 minutes thinking.
Add improper blocksize, redundant datasets, lack of compression, poor
migration policy, etc.
