Oy. Did not mean to cause a firestorm over this. Sure, it can add up; but a big 
database back then was what, 10M rows? So saving one byte was 10MB, not 
nothing, but still only 5% of a 3330. At some point, the cost of folks' time 
and the extra CPU involved also becomes significant. And dealing with it now is 
going to cost even more. So my comment was meant just to be rueful, as in, "It 
might have made sense at the time, and now we're really sorry; c'est la guerre."
