Oy. Did not mean to cause a firestorm over this. Sure, it can add up; but a big database back then was what, 10M rows? So saving one byte was 10MB, not nothing, but still only 5% of a 3330. At some point, the cost of folks' time and the extra CPU involved also becomes significant. And dealing with it now is going to cost even more.
