We have not built a DSS standalone for decades, but we fairly regularly
update/rebuild standalone dump, which is pretty much the same idea. I looked at
the BUILDSA command, which creates the DSS standalone similar to the SAD
AMDSADMP command. The important keyword for DSS is OPERCNSL(), which tells DSS
how to communicate with the operator. As I understand it, there are three
options: HMC OpSysMsg interface; a specific console by unit address; or
neither. In the case of neither, DSS will respond to the first console
interrupt it sees. Depending on the I/O configuration, the last option could
represent any 'channel attached' 3270 in the shop. I remember a time when most
'local' devices were eligible for this honor. It was not uncommon for an
operator to run around the data center looking for whichever console was
displaying the SAD prompt. Not a good plan.

Fast way forward to the day of HMC and ICC consoles. We also have Visara to
support 'local 3270', which are *very* limited in number. Although Visara has
been our standard for years, there have been times when it goes on the fritz.
Not just for SAD, but for normal operation. For normal, there are workarounds.
For standalone, the choices are a rock and hard place. So we standardized some
time ago on the HMC. Not everyone has access to the HMC, but surely any person
who can reach the HMC to initiate SAD can also bring up an OpSysMsg screen.
Thankfully we don't need to do this often, but it has never failed us.

Thanks Jim & Brian
We have Visara which seems to not be working.
Ticket is open on it.
