Thank you. Yes I do not have any options for rewriting the application itself. 
If grew out of old methods of displaying a message, having it looked up, then a 
response given by the operator. I cannot touch the underlying application, but 
I have to make it work in context of a fully automated stand alone and 
virtually unmanned system. I have seen the technique of leaving a WTOR open on 
the console before. I believe some subsystems do it. In this particular program 
there are complexities my example does not show. Text that is used as a 
security lookup is extracted, and other events are looked for to determine if, 
when and what type of response is to be given. I do not like leaving WTORs open 
because some one could potentially come and respond to it through the console, 
perhaps cancelling a critical process. In fact for some I have had to set carts 
to ensure that only the programmed response is the one accepted. Leaving the 
WTOR open leads to an increase of programmed complexity.
