Very true. All the major carriers in the U.S. have (or at least had) e-mail
to SMS gateways for text messaging, and we (collectively) have been using
those for a long time, direct from z/OS. Unfortunately outside the U.S.
such carrier-operated gateways are much less common.

SMPP is the classic text messaging protocol, approaching 20 years of
history, but REST APIs are now getting quite popular.
