IBM claims only a common law trademark in z10. They have a registered trademark on System z (but not z Systems, as I incorrectly asserted earlier).
I don't know (IANAL) that there is a statutory prohibition on single letter trademark registrations but I suspect such a registration would be nearly impossible to obtain. If I were an > IBM trademark lawyer I would be taking a very long, hard look at HP Z. There was a similar discussion here (with some of the same contributors) in Feb 2013 on the Blackberry Z10 smartphone. Of course no one is going to confuse a phone with a server (though that Blackberry probably has way more computing power than say, an S/370 145).
