Ah yes, the PIN. That has confounded me in the past. But I had the impression that all consoles were PINned, not just the NIP console. A console can be removed with IEARELCN, but before z/OS 2.1, an IPL is required to redefine it. I have not explored the new function in 2.1 to (re)define a console on the fly, which I regard as crucial for full system availability.
