There is a symlinker.lua module in /install which I knocked up based on
code kindly borrowed from Kirk and Steve at dovetailed.
It should prompt you to replace existing symlinks. If it doesn't there
is a bug.
I removed that old version,
established the correct symlinks, and all is sunny and bright. This is not
likely to happen to any other person out there. I wonder if an "ln -sf"
would be a good idea? That would take case of the case of someone
installing a new version into a different subdirectory but wanting the
existing symlinks updated to point to the new version instead of the old.
Or am I the only one weird enough to do that?

You are not running the correct version of Lua. You have another version
