Clear as mud <g> The OP is using bits as a representation of some quantity; if more of these units are to be assigned, then it is reasonable to assume that there is a limiting value, but there is no expectation for the limit to be a multiple of eight. While the limit check could also be done distinctly, that adds avoidable complexity.
