Surely something you'd want to offload to a zIIP. The cost of
processing things like mouse movements on a regular CP would be
prohibitive, I'd think.
IIRC, it's the X server running on the PC that handles mouse movements
and graphics rendering. It sends events to the client running on the
mainframe.
I once tried running a Java swing application on a z800 and it was an
underwhelming experience. Response time was about 30 seconds for a mouse
click
on a radio button.
Who knows what the future holds with PCI card hardware accelerators/zBX
etc. It's certainly feasible that a rack of blades running VDIs
connected to a mainframe via high-speed interconnects
might fly.
