An alternative CKD option is expected to be available in due course - z/PDOS (very different from z/PDOS-generic) which already uses CKD disks, will be updated to include MVS-style update mode (which is what z/OS PCDOS is using), and then z/PDOS-generic (aka z/Windows) can run under z/PDOS. z/PDOS has been proven to run on real hardware already.
