Yes - I used to keep a CD/DVD of the ZZSA standalone system on the top of all my HMC's. Last ditch repair of something if needed when an IPL failed.

Indeed, you could IPL from DVD which was a part of COD (Customized Offering Driver) - but see above. Contrary to z/VM the COD had (has?) to be inserted to HMC optical drive.
