Well, I have never had problems with inches, feet, yards, miles, naval miles, polish miles (the longest) or even old russian arshin.
I always had tables for that.

IMHO it is good idea to order "a bit longer" cables than you need *now*.
Maybe in the future you will have to move some box one tile, so it is good to have a reserve. Secondary extent :-) For CTC within single machine it is still good to have a reserve. There is no pain in having a few scrolls more. BTW: there is some minimum for FICON (FC) connection. AFAIK it is approx. half meter (~1,6 ft).

And don't do like I did a few years ago :) A co-worker ordered four
3-meter FICON cables for CTC connections from one card to another on the
same machine. Since I'm American I don't really know how long a meter
is so I said "sure". When I went on site, a couple of cables had to run
from one side of the z13s to the other, and they barely made it by going
under the frame - but still above the raised floor. A bit tacky.

For most practical purposes it's a longish yard (about 39 inches). Maybe
not the longest yard, but...
