Thanks for the Rexx exec. One change you may want to is that you don't have to check for 'DEC' as there can be other numeric formats like "smallinit" , "Integer" "Float" and different date and time fields. So checking for CHAR or VARCHAR should be enough and everything other than them would be in ELSE part.
