In the early 80's I was customizing some 3274's with another guy who, for some reason, lifted up one of the floor tiles to look at the wiring underneath. The floor tile didn't go back into place right away, so he stomped on it, when all of a sudden, sparks flew out of the floor when the tile cut through the 3274's power cables.
Also early in the 80's, we had just installed a halon system in the machine with alarms that triggered at the first whiff of smoke. I was giving my Dad a tour of the datacenter when he lit up a cigarette. It took me a few seconds to realize what he did before I quickly ushered him out of the door much to his confusion and consternation. We once had a data check we could not get past on a 3420 tape. This was around 1980, MVS/SE 1 or thereabouts. The lead sysprog hit stop on the tape drive, pulled the leading tape portion out of the vacuum column, rubbed it gently back and forth between his finger and thumb, and slowly released the tape back into the vacuum column. He hit start on the tape drive and we got past the data check and read the rest of the data on that tape without a problem. No blocks were missed. I thought that was magic at the time...
