Dunno whether this counts, but I got very far (but not quite all the way) to
hacking Colossal Cave's "magic mode". That wasn't on an IBM mainframe; it was
a DecSystem-10. On that machine you could stop program execution with a
Ctrl-C, then inspect the machine code at your leisure. And I was writing a lot
of stuff in that machine's assembler, so I could interpret it fairly easily.

But it was at a university, where my boss apparently had the university
attitude: He didn't mind if I learned new machine skills, attended an Arabic
class, whatever as long as I met his needs. Still, it was on my employer's
equipment.

OK, it's not the silly season, but have you ever used your employers equipment
to do something silly? And are not afraid to admit it?

Well, I have in the early 1990'ies, and I actually got away with it, without
losing my job.

And talking about jobs, if anyone of you know of any companies looking for
someone with 36+ years of PL/I, and a bit less Db2 and CICS, feel free to drop
me a line.

So what did I do? Let's go back a few years…
