Plus, I’ve worked in 15 shops in my career, including banking, insurance, retail, and health care. In all of them, the mainframe is the most important and most used platform. And it’s not even close.

I recently met a software architect from a bank who told me that the explosion of internet banking app usage has pushed up the TCO of their mainframe to unacceptable levels. 70% of those transactions were reads (folks checking their bank balances on their phones). Their solution was use Apache Kafka to replicate the data to Apache Cassandra and only hit the mainframe for writes. Apache Kafka can be deployed on z/OS but it was crippled due to the BPX1MMP (mmap) service being contained to 2GB.
