I tried a lot. 'quote' is not necessary I think, when talking to a z/OS host. Frankly, I don't even understand why there should be a need for any code page conversion. I don't want to "convert" anything. Surely, I don't want to convert $ to £, nor $ (x'5B' in IBM-500) to $ (x'4B' in IBM-285). I want x'5B' to remain x'5B' - and I don't care how x'5B' appears in an emulator with code page 285 (it'll be £ though).
