When you say initialize do you mean any of the following?
Write a tape mark at the beginning so the tape is non-labeled.
Create the VOL1 record so the tape is SL.
Update the VOL1 record so the SL tape has a different volser.
Erase the tape so that all previous data is no longer accessible.
Does the initialization need to be reflected in your tape management system?
If so, which one?
Is the tape mounted in some kind of robot or ATL? If so, which one?
