No doubt a subtle form of humor for this group to use another overloaded acronym, "IPA".

I made the mistake of getting IPA by accident once when intending beer/ale. Have never forgotten what India Pale Ale is like (yuk) and won't make that mistake again; but I'm sure in sufficient quantities it would put an end to any argument over "acceptable" or "correct" pronunciation - hence, I submit, this could be a plausible interpretation of IPA in this context -- though knowing John's posts, I'm sure the interpretation of one of the later Google links was intended. :)
