I've never specified the master catalog - here's the JCL I've used
successfully in the past:
MALA07 is the volser.
//STEP1 EXEC PGM=IDCAMS
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//MALA07 DD DSN=SYS1.VVDS.VMALA07,VOL=SER=MALA07,DISP=SHR,UNIT=SYSALLD
//SYSIN DD *
DELETE YOUR.DSN.HERE FILE(MALA07) VVR
