*There Must Be A Provision!!*
It is shocking news that question papers would not be provided
in URDU language for the uniform medical entrance test that is to be
conducted for the first time on all India level from this year as decided
by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The examination has
been christened as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-2013)
will be conducted by the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi)
for admission to MBBS/BDS Courses across the country. Besides the two
Union government’s official languages namely Hindi and English, some
regional languages such as Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Gujarati were also
included as language of examination. It is an irony of sorts that Urdu
having a pan-Indian presence, was left out from the ambit of examination.
This is sheer injustice with the Urdu medium students who are thousands in
numbers and aspiring to appear for the examination.
It is to be mentioned here, in Maharashtra, Directorate of
Medical Education and Research has been conducting the Medical Entrance
Test in Urdu medium too. Similarly, in Andhra Pradesh also there is a
provision for Urdu language in EAMCET (Engineering Agricultural and Medical
Common Entrance Test).The same facility was also available in other states
of the country.
Earlier, the Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare has decided that
the question papers would be set in English and Hindi. However, in response
to the huge demand from various groups, students organizations and
aspirants of NEET-2013, Medical Council of India (MCI), Delhi, has agreed
to set question paper in above mentioned regional languages. Again, it
added two more regional languages i.e. Assamese and Marathi.
Addition of these languages seems to be result of good thinking on the part
of the government and it should be appreciated for this. But shockingly,
Urdu as an important and widely used language across the county, was not
considered for the ‘test’ and omitted from the list. It will directly
affect the academic career and future of thousands of students across the
country that are studying in Urdu medium and getting ready to appear in the
test with Urdu medium.
We would like to mention an interesting fact here that there
is not a single Marathi Medium Science Jr. college in all over the
Maharashtra. But the state boasts of having 168 Urdu Medium Jr.colleges
with more than 6000 students is appearing for XII (Science) with Urdu
medium in Maharashtra itself. Besides this, there are thousands of
students all over country are appearing XII (Science) and aspiring to get
admission in medical courses but their future may get nosedive due to
depriving them from giving examination in their own language.
To ensure equal opportunities, greater uniformity and convenience for all
aspirants across the country, there must be a provision for the Urdu
language also.
