I am commenting on your statement:   But this time I thought I'd use the 
original jpegs instead of the pngs.  I had gone into Photoshop and created 
the pngs thinking that would be better. 


If I understand what you did, and I might not, you took a jpg generated by 
the camera and processed it to a png in Photoshop because the jpg is 
lossy.  That will not improve the image.  What was lost by the jpg is gone, 
converting it just steps on the quality again. 
If you got the jpg from a raw image from the camera, then starting with the 
raw image to generate a lossless version would improve quality, but 
possibly at the cost of a larger file size.
