This is highly unusual to me, but I reset the CMOS following your
advice. Immediately rebooting the computer left it in an unbootable
state, as i mentioned in my first reply.

I let the machine sit unpowered for 48 hours and tried it again, and it
started up without any difficulty. I'm just now getting around to
updating the list. I can't really explain it, but i wanted to thank you
for the idea and add my credence to it.
