Yes, this is exactly where we're at: the "thinking exercise." Our network is huge, and the number of deployed Linux boxes will explode very soon. I'm already using a mix of cfengine and manual processes - heavier on the manual processes than I would like. Your last paragraph says it all - patching should look as much like any other release as possible. I would need to develop promises that were only auto-patching low-risk pkgs within a recurring time-frame.
