Neil, this is a fascinating topic and it reminds me of the the comparison
between

1. the evolution of intelligence
2. the evolution of the immune system

Both of these biological systems have evolved to solve complex search problems.
The immune system, like Cfengine, uses `dumb principles' iterated to achieve an
emergent result, while the brain models and reasons more directly, but with
huge overhead (no pun intended, but it works quite well!). The main difference
is that the modelling has a lot of overhead and ends up costing the body 10-20%
of all its energy budget. In the same way, I suspect that AI would not result
in a "lightweight" system which is what Cfengine aims to be, but would grind
the system to a halt.

One of the things that will be added to Cfengine's commercial products over the
coming years in a lot more "AI" reasoning capabilities at a central super-brain
location so it does not cost the infrastructure much to run. I intend to write
more about this when I get time. Last year, Nova already created the "nervous
system" for this project. This year will see a lot more progress on this.

Why not start a discussion on Cfengine and AI or immunity somewhere like
arstechnica and see what kind of ideas a broad audience come up with. It could
be a fascinating read.
