A few thoughts on this thread - since starting it I have been happy to see it
(and others) in my inbox - thx all. I think people underestimate how
transitory everything is on the Internet, and a lost link shouldn't be lost
knowledge. ok so much or the pontificatin'

1) Google groups has an unfortunate reputation for spam - although a closed
private domain list may not have that problem. I have used Google Apps (paid
version) on several projects but I don't remember if being a paid member of the
domain is required to participate in its Groups - I'll check on that.

2) opensource Projects have used email lists forever as a repository of
knowledge, project on-ramp, and key decision making forum. Forums are good for
the first two, but lack the reach a new email response gives the latter. So, I
think it would be a good thing to keep the email list.

3) If you want to build these threads into an Information Asset, you might want
to look into SIOC - a Semantic Web ontology designed for that very task.
http://sioc-project.org/

I think the easiest way would be to have the lists and the forums - and have
all posting to the Forums pushed on to the lists - the round trip is
problematic and worth it for quoting important email responses to get them into
the forum - but otherwise I would look into a SIOC based solution that pulls
from both the forums and lists to create a Cfengine knowledge base.

sorry about the kitsch subject - Ed
