Seva, I wish I had been able to inspect the system but with limits.conf corrupted I couldn't log in and opted to rebuild the OS as it was a production server. Next time (I'm really hoping there won't be one) I will pull a drive and mount it elsewhere.
The syslog messages the host sent indicated that limits.conf went missing, not that it was corrupt. So I would guess cf-agent renamed the file to limits.conf.cfsaved and then, due to cf-serverd being terminated, aborted before it could copy limits.conf in. In the interim I am going to change the copy method from a "mycopy" cf3-encapsulated transmission to a local_cp method that hopefully uses different code. Frans
