That's a good question. It was too late to start wondering on this yesterday, but I also can't see what more casting can offer compared to VAL(), STR(), INT(). Or, what is the point to cast a string to array without knowing the conversion details. Maybe I'm missing something, but to me casting looks like a conversion function which expect one type and returns another.
