Viktor or another developer can accurately describe the differences. Differences in compilers are quite significant. You can read "5. SUPPORTED PLATFORMS AND C COMPILERS" in file INSTALL. For WIN it is : win --- mingw - MinGW GNU C 3.4.2 and above mingw64 - MinGW GNU C x86-64 msvc - Microsoft Visual C++ msvc64 - Microsoft Visual C++ x86-64 msvcia64 - Microsoft Visual C++ IA-64 (Itanium) Also supported, some features may be missing: watcom - Open Watcom C/C++ bcc - Borland/CodeGear/Embarcadero C++ 4.x and above icc - Intel(R) C/C++ iccia64 - Intel(R) C/C++ IA-64 (Itanium) pocc - Pelles C 4.5 and 5.0 pocc64 - Pelles C x86-64 5.0 xcc - Pelles C for xhb cygwin - Cygwin GNU C Almost everyone went to the MinGW, and these compilers are fewer chances for errors. Roberto Lopez also uses MinGW.
