for images could you compress them using irfanview
(http://www.irfanview.net) ?
It has a plugin that compress images optimizing them for web and it
reduces at least of 50% image size.
Try it with jpeg compression of 75 and 90%.
I have just tested it and big images in main page can be reduced from:
header_1.jpg 30.047 Kb -> 90% = 11.174 Kb -> 75% 7.387 Kb
header_2.jpg 83.164 Kb -> 90% = 22.490 Kb -> 75% 14.222 Kb
