The diff between beta3 and the actual devel is huge and it seems to me
a no sense wasting time to merge them or worse release a 1.0 that's so
different in lib and dir names from the actual devel.
I think we could simply copy the actual devel branch  ( if it's
considered stable from the developers ) to beta4, warn about the
differences and move on.

I agree that release numbers means almost nothing in the OSS world but
1.0 is SPECIAL.
It means the project consider the code ready for "outside world".
After that it can be whatever we want 1.0.1, 1.1, 2.0 or 1.0pre56 it
doesn't matter.
