I have disconnected the old hard disk, power and data. I could find no loose connections anywhere. I also took the opportunity to remove some dust, particularly in the CPU heat sink.
The computer now starts up with no problems and, so far, has worked as it should, with no interruptions to the video output. It is also quieter than it was, perhaps because the CPU fan is not working as hard. Thanks to Nick, Bob, Gordon and Petyr for all the advice.
