I remember loosing some hairs on a similar issue, and in the end the solution was something extremely ridiculous, like making the printer 'active' in the CUPS we admin interface. I had never disabled it, so was quite surprised by that. I hope you can make it work; it's quite frustrating to troubleshoot problems like this, especially when we have real work to do :-).
