I don't think this is a good idea.  "aligned" in pic means
the direction of the text is aligned with the direction of
the object:

  .PS
  arrow right "aligned" "" aligned
  arrow down  "aligned" "" aligned
  .PE

means the text is horizontal in the first case, vertical
in the second.
