Your 'groff' does not find the U-* files. What does 'locate U-AB' show I get /home/bg/development/groff-1.22.4/build/font/devpdf/U-AB /home/bg/development/groff-1.22.4/build/font/devpdf/U-ABI /home/bg/git/groff/build/font/devpdf/U-AB /home/bg/git/groff/build/font/devpdf/U-ABI /home/bg/git/master-groff/groff/build/font/devpdf/U-AB /home/bg/git/master-groff/groff/build/font/devpdf/U-ABI /home/bg/src/groff-1.22.4/build/font/devpdf/U-AB /home/bg/src/groff-1.22.4/build/font/devpdf/U-ABI /usr/share/groff/1.23.0/font/devpdf/U-AB /usr/share/groff/1.23.0/font/devpdf/U-ABI The last two are relevant for installed 'groff' (in Debian). -.- N.B. Your lines are too long.
