I've sort of addressed this, by making the diagnostic message explain
the meaning and consequence of this condition (although it's still a bit
esoteric), and also by documenting it as a known potential problem.

I'd like feedback on the point in the second commit message.

"I'm wondering about hacking afmtodit to just silently ignore duplicate
mappings when the AGL target is 'uniXXXX', but I'm not sure yet."

As I understand it, the whole point of having these mappings is to
convert groff special character names to Adobe Glyph List names.  But
there's not really any reason to do this for "uniXXXX', is there?  You'd
just ask for \[uXXXX] in groff.

An ever-increasing number of Unicode code points will have names in
neither list.
