Although others have made suggestions that may be better (I don't know),
would using the built-in tbl support in sc (the text-based Spreadsheet
Calculator) be useful for your purposes?

Disclaimer: I began maintaining sc about six years ago, since it seemed
to have been orphaned at the time, and I needed some features that were
not present. Although I haven't released a version in a little over
three years, I guess I'm still the official maintainer, and I really
ought to release another version.

I've been lurking here for awhile, but haven't really started using
groff yet, but when I do, I'll probably want to improve the tbl support
in sc, so if anyone uses it, please feel free to make suggestions.

Chuck
